Floods can happenalmost anywhere.

Flood damage is generally not covered by standard home or condo insurance. We help you explore separate flood coverage options for your property and belongings.

Understand your options

What can flood insurance cover?

Flood policies commonly offer separate building and personal property coverage. Your options and limits depend on the policy and insurer.

Building coverage

May cover eligible structural damage and systems such as electrical, plumbing, and built-in appliances.

Personal belongings

Contents coverage may help with eligible furniture, clothing, and other possessions, subject to limits.

Floodwater damage

Protection may apply to qualifying flooding events, such as overflowing inland waters or surface-water accumulation.

Deductibles and limits

Compare building and contents limits as well as applicable deductibles for your property.

NFIP and private options

Explore eligibility for National Flood Insurance Program coverage and available private-market alternatives.

Coverage timing

Waiting periods and lender requirements may apply. Plan ahead rather than waiting for a storm.

Worth discussing: Most homeowners and condo policies exclude flooding. Flood coverage may have a waiting period and does not cover every type of water damage.

Frequently asked questions

Good questions. Clear answers.

Do I need flood insurance outside a high-risk zone?

Flooding can occur outside mapped high-risk areas. Your lender may require flood insurance in certain zones, but coverage can also be purchased voluntarily.

Does flood insurance start immediately?

Not always. NFIP policies generally have a 30-day waiting period, with exceptions; private flood waiting periods vary.

Does it cover my belongings too?

Building and contents coverage may be separate. Review both to understand what is and is not insured.

Will flood insurance cover basement contents?

Coverage for basements and items below the lowest elevated floor is often limited, particularly under NFIP policies. Review policy-specific restrictions.
